What are those 5 Key Areas of Identity Theft??

Each time I tell someone that our company covers and protects people’s Identities in all 5 key areas, they always ask me what the 5 key areas are.  More than 80% of the time they are surprised that their are that many areas of identity theft, and of that percentage, about 98% are even more surprised in finding out that financial identity theft is only about 27% of the problem!  So I will briefly explain what these 5 key areas are…including financial.  You will also see that by checking your credit report and score, you are not necessarily doing enough to protect your identity from these other major risks.

Driver’s LicenseThis type of theft involves someone getting a driver’s license with your name, address, sometimes photograph, etc.  I am sure some of you have been this type of thief at some point during your younger days, but let’s not go into that.  This may be harmful to you if someone with your license gets pulled over and pretends to be you, giving the officer the license with all of your information on it. Now everything that the person did wrong goes onto your record.

MedicalThis is, unfortunately, the MOST DANGEROUS and fastest growing area of identity theft.  This occurs when someone else get medical insurance, surgeries, etc. in your name.  Then, when something happens to you and you need medical attention, serious negative consequences are likely to occur.  For example, if the thief lists a different blood type in you records and you need a blood transfusion…the doctor gives you type A but you are actually type O.  You are now dead and cannot report that your information was stolen.  The thief lives on.  Everyone is vulnerable to this type of identity theft, whether you are 5 mos. old or 5 decades old.  Check out this ABC news story to see how true what I’m saying really is.

Social Security – This is when someone takes your social security number and pretends to be you.  The potentially negative reprecussions when a person steals your social security number are endless.  For example you could apply for a job and be VERY qualified but get turned down for drug charges that are found in you background check, and of course you didn’t put them there, so you can say, “Thank you identity thief!”  Check out this news story.

Character/Criminal – This is when someone commits a crime in your name, and the police come to you about it.  With this type of identity theft, victims usually do not know it has even occurred until the police break down their front doors and haul you, the victim, off to jail, thinking that you are the criminal.  There are many people that this has happened to and they have spent years in prison, while the real thief still runs the streets freely!  Check out what happened to this kid here!

Financial – I do not think this one needs any explanation, but it occurs when someone opens a new bank account or anything like that in your name.  This is the most publicized and well known type of identity theft, but also the easiest to fix.  This is the least harmful, but most people focus on this one.  This is why many identity thieves steal start in this area and create a diversion so they can move on to one of harder hitting areas.

These are the 5 key areas that we protect for our members, and if anything were to happen we go in and restore all your information with you or for you.  This is all done by our partner company Kroll.  This is one of the largest risk management companies in the world.  This is the company that governments go to when risk management is needed.  This is the company that found and recovered the $250 million that Sadaam stole from the US, so I am pretty sure they can figure out who stole grandma Betty’s debit card.  If anyone you know is interested in a membership to protect their loved ones and themselves, contact me by phone or email.

Identity Protection Tip

I was always told that it hurts your credit every time your report is looked at.  Well, it NOT true if YOU are that person checking it.  You are allowed to view your own credit report every year without incurring any loss of points in your credit score.

This is just a quick tip for you guys for the day.  Feel free to comment or present anything you would like concerning this topic.

Be the Best!
